The Story of Raja Indian Restaurant in Cambridge

Aminur Rahman aka Raja started his journey over 20 years ago, its a true rag to riches story.

Raja’s father came to this country as a humble rice merchant with dreams of making a new life for his family in the UK. After many years of working hard and struggling, he finally managed to save up and buy a house for his family, with that key event, he slowing started bringing his family over from Bangladesh to start a new life.

By the ’90s most of England had been saturated with Indian restaurants, however further up north and in particular; Scotland had still been untouched. Raja’s father spotted a gap in the market and headed to Scotland with the family in the 1970s to start a new business venture.

Raja finally got his big break after opening Ali’s in 1979. With an explosion of success in the Scottish highlands. Raja’s father, his sons’ including young Raja, started opening more and more branches throughout the Scottish Highlands. By the year 2000, there were over 20 branches all throughout Scotland with branches stretching to Stornaway in the Isle of Lewis and in the Isle of Skye.

Raja’s father started from the bottom and worked his way up. His first job was a kitchen porter in a small rural town of Pitlochry, next to Loch Ness, Scotland. Slowly moving his way up to cook then eventually to head chef of a 100 seater restaurant.

After many years of working in the family business, Raja had his heart set on fulfilling his own dreams; which was to open his own restaurant in Scotland.

Why Scotland?

Raja is the youngest of 5 brothers, all of whom have been established in the Scottish Highlands for over 15 years before Raja had arrived in the UK, naturally, when he arrived in the United Kingdom he moved to Scotland where his family was rooted.
